#QT- Iyinoluwa Aina
I know I’ve been slacking on my #QTS, but I’m back and hoping to be more consistent! If this the first post you’re reading welcome! #QTS is a spotlight series on different people's skincare routine, with different skin issues or concerns. The goal is to highlight the diversity and celebrate everyone's skin, loving the skin you are in.
My very first #QT of the DECADE is Iyinoluwa Aina. She was basically the first person I ever did a skin consultation with and have seen her skin literally transform over time. Iyinoluwa is the sweetest, super reliable, driven and very playful. To think I didn’t like her when I first met her, now I can’t imagine life without her.
Iyinoluwa’s main skin concern is one I get a lot of questions about and a common skin concern across the board -- Hyperpigmentation
My name is Iyinoluwa Aina. I’m from Lagos, Nigeria but I live in the UK.
I’m 23 years old.
What’s your skin type?
My skin is type is combination, closer to the dry side and slightly sensitive.
What are your skin concerns? When did you first notice them?
My main skin concerns are the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation marks I have from my teenage acne. I first noticed them when I was 18 or so, starting off in university.
How have you tackled this/these skin concern(s)?
It’s been such a battle! Basically, by trial and error, then I found Arami’s Onyx polish. That helped with my residual acne and then I started tackling the hyperpigmentation. I incorporated Retin A 0.05% into my skincare routine which accelerated the process. I also make sure my skin is hydrated 24/7. I find that hydrated skin doesn’t tend to breakout often. If I'm not breaking out often, I'm not getting as many hyperpigmentation marks.
How would you describe your skincare routine?
I’d describe it as relatively low maintenance, targeted and practical.
Talk us through your skincare routine (Name products)
Day-time: I love to keep it simple because I have early starts [life of a medic] and not a lot of time in the mornings.
I start off by cleansing my skin with Avène cleansing foam. It’s amazing if your skin is super sensitive! You can use it around your eyes, no problem.
For toning, I use the Arami Eden Elixir. It is a rose water toner and very gentle.
Serums, Serums, Serums! This is my favourite part. My serums tend to change, but currently I’m using:
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + zinc 1%
Avène Hydrance Intense serum
The ordinary Caffeine solution 5% + EGCG for my puffy eyes
Moisturiser – La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Riche
Don’t forget the SPF – I use Heliocare Advanced gel spf 50 – yes even in Cardiff, yes even in the winter! I’m not letting these marks come back!
Night-time: This is when I’m a little harsher with my skin. She can take it!
Wash – Arami Onyx polish (there’s one for sensitive skin now)
Exfoliate – I use a chemical or physical exfoliant depending on the day of the week and how much I think my skin needs it.
I use Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix scrub, a physical exfoliant twice a week (it’s a little harsh).
The Arami Glow Scrub, a physical exfoliant! When you want to look sun kissed, go for this! It’s relatively gentle on skin too.
The chemical exfoliants I use are: Paula’s Choice Skin perfecting 2% BHA, Alpha-H Liquid Gold or Pixi Glow Tonic . I use these in no particular order, but I don’t use them all at the same time! It depends on what my skin needs that night
The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2%
Barefaced Vitamin C+ E corrective oil
I used to finish off with Retin A 0.05%
How often do you mask?
Less than I’d like. When I’m on holiday its usually twice a week, but during university time it could be as little as once a month.
Sheet or Clay Masks?
I actually like both. I used to be completely clay masks, but I started using sheet masks and I love them!
What’s your favourite mask(s) to use?
Arami purity mask never disappoints
What’s your superhero skincare product? The product you cannot live without
I’d say my La Roche Posay hydraphase intense moisturiser. It makes my skin feel so supple!
What’s your game-changing product? The product you feel was a catalyst to your skin improving.
Definitely the Onyx Polish! That changed everything!
What’s the best skincare tip you have been given? Who gave you?
“Patience! It takes time to see results”- Qskin (Muniq Bakare)
What advice will you give someone with your skin type/ with similar skin concerns to you?
I’d say keep it simple, be disciplined and stick to your routine. Please don’t use so many harsh chemicals on your skin, because it just makes it worse. Wait at least 3 months for noticeable results. It takes time. My skin isn’t where I want it to be, but it’s definitely much better.
